Just passing through ... ...

While cycling through the UK on a long distance route you could do worse than spend a few extra days to explore an area more closely.

Shorter, local cycle routes such as Cycling in Shetland, On Your Bike in Surrey and Lincolnshire can fit neatly into a long distance and can offer a brief respite and a break from the steep valley hillsides on the Pennine Cycleway. Many of the maps are downloadable too and long distance cyclists can take advantage of these regional maps.

On this section we've also tried to include a small selection of other cycle links aimed at promoting town cycling and shorter safe family forest routes - local authorities in the UK and organisations such as the Forestry Commission produce many maps to encourage cycling whether on a long distance trail or just getting to work on time.

Circular rides, linear routes, half-day and longer rides are included, while the family rides and city centre cycle maps give a flavour of wider cycling developments in the UK.
