The Union Canal lies within the heart of Edinburgh city and the 40 tonne Leamington Lift Bridge is where the cycle route joins the canal. Although not in its original location, the bridge was officially reopened in 2002 in recognition of its importance to the success of the canal, allowing traction engines to cross the canal's waterway.
