Bellingham is now a market town which once had a flourishing iron industry. More recently it was readily placed to support the building of Kielder Reservoir which was built in the late 1970's to early 1980's to maintain an adequate water supply for the north-east of England. The reservoir opened in 1982 and was the largest man-made lake in Europe, having swamped 2,684 acres of land and created 27 miles of shoreline. There is the opportunity from Bellingham to detour to Kielder Forest via the Reivers Cycle Route should you have an extra day to spare.
In Bellingham itself, Hareshaw Burn with its 30ft waterfall is just north of the town and the Heritage Centre has changing exhibitions covering photography, the Reivers and local history.
