Since leaving Berwick, the Cheviot Hills have been seen in the distance but this is where the route gets close to the hills and moorland which form the northernmost part of Northumberland National Park.

Northumberland National Park stretches from Hadrians Wall in the south and up through Northumberland to the Cheviots. With one foot in Scotland and the other in England, the Cheviot Hills have always been an important part of the Park yet remain relatively unvisited, many people choosing to visit Hadrians Wall and Kielder Reservoir instead.

The National Park in fact covers some 400 miles and is one of the most remote and unspoilt of all the English National Parks. The Cheviots add much to its appeal, with its dramatic and unspoilt scenery of high fells, moorland and river valleys of north Northumberland.
