The route offers a chance to stay at Rothbury, an attractive and peaceful place today, although in times gone by a typically rough border town. Rothbury, the capital of Coquetdale, derives its name from Anglo-Saxon times when it was called Routh Biria meaning `Routha's Town'.
This is part of the quiet link from Rothbury alongside Northumberland's longest river, the River Coquet, rejoining the cycle route at Hepple.
