The Pennine Cycleway and C2C cycle route have now intersected, and a roughish, steep track leads for a while towards Hartside Pass - for little additional mileage (about ½ mile) you can avoid the rough track by continuing along country roads before rejoining at the end of this rough section - before the final attempt on the summit of Hartside Pass and the shelter of Hartside Cafe. It's a long ascent up Hartside but on a fine day it's worth the effort if only for the views of the Lake District. And then the long descent to Alston and on.
