After 344 miles and only 6 miles from the finish in Berwick the Pennine Cycleway steps into Scotland for three miles before its return to England.

The Union Bridge was built in 1820 and changed peoples lives with its ease of access across an often dangerous full flowing river heading into the North Sea at Berwick. The opening of the Bridge was a real cause for celebration:

"On the big day itself, people gathered on the riverbanks as Captain Samuel Brown, designer of the Bridge, was first to cross in an open-top carriage. He was followed by dozens of heavily laden carts, pulled by horses, to prove the strength of the bridge. Reassured, the spectators and traders flooded across the new link to Scotland with its access to other markets and other towns."
