This is part of the South Tynedale Railway that once ran from Alston to Haltwhistle. The railway stretches all of the 10 miles to Haltwhistle and includes the spectacular Lambley Railway Viaduct

But there's a twist in the tale. Someone has bought a short section of land along the old railway line and refuses access, meaning a slightly circuitous route before rejoining the railway track again for the sake of a few hundred metres of privately owned land. But whatever, make sure you backtrack a short distance and take in the curving Viaduct before heading along the railway line again to Haltwhistle.
