Souter Lighthouse from Tynemouth Priory. The route heads past the Lighthouse alongside beaches and cliff-tops to Sunderland. It's almost all off-road cycling as the route hugs the cliff-tops on a purpose built footpath and cycleway as it heads to Sunderland Marina (finishing point of the C2C route) and then either along to Seaham or up to Consett.

The River Tyne is funneled into the sea here between the two piers of Tynemouth and South Shields as the River flows into the North Sea. Many ships have been built here on the River and at one time Tyneside built 25% of the world's ships, but like coalmining, shipbuilding has long been in decline although the area keeps its important maritime links through South Tyneside College which attracts further and higher education students from around the world.
