The first disused railway of many to come is the Cheshire Line and 10 miles using the old railway to Aintree racecourse on the edge of Liverpool.

The Cheshire Lines Railway Company used to operate services past here from Liverpool to Southport providing a link for daytrippers to the seaside. The increase in car ownership signaled its decline and closure in 1952 and after a period of disuse and neglect, in 2000 it was being used again as part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
