Just after Hadfield, the reservoirs begin. The Longdenden Trail is seven miles long through the picturesque Upper Longdendale Valley, part of the Peak District National Park, following the route of the old Great Central Manchester Sheffield Railway line. High moorland lies to one side and five reservoirs to the other so it's a really lovely place to cycle slowly by with resting points all along the way.
The reservoirs were completed in 1877 and were the largest artificial expanses of water in the world at that time and it brought prosperity and high employment to the area due to the heavy scale of coal transportation between the pits in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire and industries of Lancashire. The reservoirs are still used supplying water each day to Manchester.
