Cairngorm Mountain Railway The Cairngorm Mountain Railway, nine miles from Aviemore, is the highest mountain railway in the UK, climbing the slopes of Cairngorm, the UK's fifth highest mountain and one of Scotland's most extreme Arctic environments. Travelling up the wind-scoured slopes the trip gives a close-up view of the northern Cairngorms, which are valued for their landscapes and rare habitats. Weather dominates the life of the mountains and no matter which season, you can see the changes from the bottom to the top of the Cairngorm Mountain - created and moulded by over 400 million years of geological drama, while down in the valley below lies the ancient Caledonian pine forest and Loch Morlich. Nestled just 122 metres below the summit of CairnGorm itself, Ptarmigan Station offers spectacular views, combining with the Mountain Exhibition which gives information about the Cairngorms and the mountains in this area - stories of how the mountains have evolved, how wildlife has adapted to survive in such extreme conditions, climate change, and human impact on the mountain landscape are all explored. Cairngorm Mountain Rangers offer a guided 'Walk and Talk' programme throughout the summer months. It's a little off the route but if you can include an extra day away from the Scottish National Cycle Route then this whole area and its scenery is worth exploring. CairnGorm Mountain
