SEVERN AND THAMES ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The Severn And Thames cycle route links two great rivers of southern England, the Severn and the Thames.

From the cathedral city of Gloucester, the route heads south using the towpath of the Sharpness canal and runs close to one of the best viewing sites for the Severn Bore as the wave surges up the river, a natural wonder well worth the detour.

There are then fifteen miles of traffic-free path between Bristol and Bath, and from there it's onto Bradford-upon-Avon. Through this beautiful Wiltshire countryside, you can then choose to either cycle along the Kennet & Avon Canal to the splendid Caen Hill flight of locks at Devizes, or head over the Wiltshire Downs via Chippenham, Calne and Marlborough, before rejoining the canal near Newbury. The latter offers the chance to visit Avebury and explore the historic Ridgeway and Savernake Forest.
